Shell Funds 'Clean' Bus Project

Shell Deer Park Refining Company and the Deer Park Independent School District (DPISD) are teaming up to replace conventional diesel school buses with new and rebuilt buses that are more environmentally friendly.

Shell recently donated $170,000 to DPISD that will go toward the purchase of two new ultra-low sulfur diesel buses, and fund approximately 20 percent of the cost of retrofitting eight existing buses. The new buses will result in the retirement of two non-retrofittable buses in the DPISD fleet. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of September.

"I am very pleased that Shell has been able to contribute directly to the environmental upgrade of a significant number of school buses in the community", said Tim Hake, president/CEO of Shell Deer Park Refining Company.

In accepting the check from Hake, Arnold Adair, superintendent of DPISD, said, "The district has a long history of partnership with Shell, and we are certainly happy to continue that relationship through this project."

The funding of buses is one of the supplemental environmental projects that the refining company is undertaking as part of a 2001 consent decree with the U.S. EPA. In October 2002, Shell donated $100,000 to the district's Outdoor Learning Center as part of the consent decree.
