| Survey Reveals Shell as Credible Industrial Facility
Approximately 400 Deer Park residents and 416 North Channel residents were surveyed in January 2004 by an independent consultant affiliated with the University of Houston. The purpose of the surveys was to evaluate and compare community perceptions of industry and Shell Deer Park with similar surveys conducted in 2000.
In summary, there continues to be overall support for industry. However, the public expects industry to go the extra mile; reduce pollution, odors and noise; and improve the community by continuing their support of education and local activities.
“The surveys are an important part of our strategy involving community assessment, outreach and involvement,” says Dave McKinney, manager of community relations. “An effective social performance plan is one that reflects local concerns and issues by targeting support that helps meet those needs.”
Respondents believe that Shell is the most credible of industries operating in Deer Park. They see Shell as a leader on all fronts, which include education, pollution reduction, worker safety, employment, community support and advancing the quality of life. When asked what Shell needs to do to improve its performance, residents cited: improve pollution control, communicate openly, reduce flaring, be honest and operate safer. |
