| Shell Deer Park Earns ISO 14001 Certification
Shell Deer Park refinery and chemical plant each has received certification to the ISO 14001 international standard for environmental management systems (EMS).
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) grants the registration to companies with a demonstrated commitment to environmental stewardship.
ISO 14001 standards incorporate work processes that ensure continuous improvement in environmental performance. Following rigorous assessments throughout the facility, the British Standards Institute (BSI), a third-party agency that evaluates management systems, recommended the certification for both the refinery and chemical plant.
“First, BSI verified that the documentation of Shell Deer Park environmental management systems met standards,” explains Randy Burow, quality manager for the refinery. “After the procedures review, they conducted an extensive field assessment to make sure we are performing according to our stated documentation.”
While the certification conveys that we have met high standards for environmental management systems, it isn’t a one-time designation. BSI assessments of Shell will continue every six months for two years. “We can’t rest on our laurels, because we must continually maintain and improve our management systems to remain certified,” says Shari Keller, chemical plant staff environmental specialist.
ISO 14001 certification validates that Shell Deer Park understands its regulatory responsibilities and is managing risks in its operations for minimal environmental impact.
“Our certification also shows that SDP’s commitment goes beyond just compliance,” Keller notes. “We are doing some things right and striving to get better.” |
