Chemical Plant Earns National Award for Energy Efficiency

Shell Deer Park Chemical Plant received the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Energy Efficiency Award on Nov. 16 for its exceptional success in conserving energy, improving the environment and increasing economic productivity. The ACC honored 11 companies for improving energy efficiency during 2004. Shell was one of five companies to receive the prestigious “Exceptional Merit” designation for the excellence of its conservation program, Energize.

By implementing Energize, a Shell Global energy efficiency program, the chemical plant reduced its energy consumption in 2004 by 2.1 percent. This resulted in an annual savings of 80,000 tons of associated CO2 emissions.

“The Energize methodology is used to deliver energy savings primarily through operational improvements,” says Steve Moon, chemical plant technical manager.

Moon says teamwork was key in achieving significant results. “The entire program would not have been possible, nor as successful, without clear endorsement by site management and the full cooperation of maintenance, operations and technical support staff,” he says.

ACC Executive Vice President Charles Van Vlack congratulated Shell on its success. “These awards publicly recognize that energy efficiency projects reduce greenhouse gases,” he says. “It’s a win-win situation for the country because the improvements protect the environment while helping American business compete globally.”
