Shell volunteers enhance gymnasium at local charity

Shell Deer Park’s volunteer organization completed a variety of fix-up projects on Saturday, Aug. 12 at the Boys and Girls Harbor in La Porte. About 30 employees, along with their friends and family, painted the lower half of the gymnasium, disassembled the gym’s old, wooden bleachers and assembled and installed new aluminum bleachers and players’ benches. Volunteers also built a storage area for a concession stand, expanded the basketball uniform room and installed shelves in the sound room.

Deer Park Chemical employee Russell Adams, who coordinated the fix-up project, says a lot of work was completed in a short amount of time. “The gym at the Harbor is used nearly every day for several different activities, and with the new bleachers and benches and a new coat of paint, it will be much nicer for the children’s use.”

The Boys and Girls Harbor is a nonprofit organization that serves abused, neglected and at-risk children. The long-term residential facility houses about 70 children.
