Deer Park LEPC recognized again as best in class

Shell Deer Park emergency responders help the Deer Park Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) with its full-scale drill in 2006 (see above photo). The Deer Park LEPC was recently named as best in its population division (50,000 and under) in the 2006 Community Award for Public Safety competition sponsored by the Chemical Educational Foundation. The Deer Park LEPC won the same award in 2004.

Shell Deer Park employees hold leadership positions in the LEPC and are instrumental in the nationally recognized success of the organization.

“We are proud and honored to be a two-time winner of this award,” stated Dave McKinney, Communications Manager for Shell Deer Park and member of Deer Park LEPC. “The Deer Park LEPC works hard to develop and test its emergency response plans to protect the community. A key to this is collaboration among LEPC members, public education and proactive communications.”

The Chemical Educational Foundation seeks to honor outstanding LEPCs each year that best display a commitment to public safety, industry partnerships and chemical safety awareness education. Award submissions are evaluated on programatic and outreach efforts that have taken place during the previous calendar year. This award is open to LEPCs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

Due to a wide variety of populations served by LEPCs across the country, the 2006 Community Award winners were divided into three population-based categories: 50,000 and under; 50,001 - 250,000; 250,001 and above.
