Shell volunteers take on large-scale fix-up project at YMCA-Pasadena

Shell Deer Park employees and family members teamed together on Aug. 18 at the YMCA in Pasadena for a fix-up project that would stretch into the following week.

All in all, the contribution of time and skill – along with substantial sweat equity – translated into a painted gymnasium, newly installed bleachers, as well as covers and benches for two dugouts on the baseball field. In addition, Brand Scaffolding provided approximately $7,000 worth of painting scaffolding. If the YMCA had contracted for the scaffolding and the services that Shell volunteers freely donated, the organization would have easily paid $20,000.

“We took on a lot of work,” concedes Will Lipham, president of Shell Deer Park’s volunteer group and Solvents production engineer. “We couldn’t have done it without Russell Adams, who did an awesome job of coordinating the project.”

Adams is CUI (corrosion under insulation) coordinator for the Chemical Plant. As the person in charge of the YMCA project, he made all the preparations to help the project run smoothly. He also mobilized approximately 20 volunteers for the first seven-hour workday of painting and bleacher construction.
