Airgas to Build CO2 Facility at Deer Park

Shell Deer Park Refining Company and Airgas, Inc. today announced the planned construction of a 450-ton-per-day liquid carbon dioxide plant at the former Lubricants area of Shell Deer Park. Airgas also entered a 15-year agreement with the Deer Park Refining LP joint venture to supply the feedstock of raw carbon dioxide.

Shell will build a pipeline to take the raw vented gas from the Hydrogen Plant (HP-1) to the two-acre Airgas site. When it goes online in late 2008, this new facility will purify and liquefy the CO2-rich gas from HP-1 and ship it by truck and rail to Airgas customers for commercial and beverage-grade use.

"This is an important initiative because it reduces the refinery’s annual emissions of CO2 by more than 3 percent and captures value for a stream that is currently vented to the atmosphere," said Aamir Farid, general manager, Shell Deer Park Refining Company. "Not only will we reduce our environmental footprint, but we will optimize our assets across the carbon energy value chain."

Shell Global Solutions helped the refinery identify the opportunities for this project, as one of many Shell organizations that is playing a critical role in providing carbon energy management capabilities.
