Contractors reach construction safety milestone

The new administrative building has transformed from a shell to an enclosed structure over the past few months. Now, a great deal of interior wiring, plumbing and finishing work is under way. While the use of large cranes hoisting steel beams has subsided somewhat, safety remains the highest priority on the project.

On Sept. 17, Shell Deer Park held a safety celebration for its contractors to mark 300 days without an OSHA recordable. “This is quite a safety accomplishment because many of these 130 or so contractors typically don’t work inside an industrial facility. This is a unique environment for many of them,” says Rodney Garrison, project engineer of Shell Global Solutions. He is overseeing project costs, schedules and technical assurance related to the Shell Deer Park Facility Siting Project.

“Everyone on this project is proud of the safety record they have accomplished, and I think they may be setting the safety standard for similar construction projects throughout Shell. Many of the contractors working on the new administrative building have said they feel safe, and they are going to take what they have learned about safety at this site to their future endeavors,” says Jerry Williamson, project safety coordinator for the new administration building project.

He adds, “How great to know that the seeds we have planted here at Shell Deer Park might help these construction workers form better safety habits and prevent them from getting hurt on their future jobs.”

During the safety celebration recently, a contractor thanked Shell Deer Park management and employees for taking safety seriously. He voiced his sentiment that because Shell cares about the well-being of contractors and employees alike and takes a proactive safety approach, he feels comfortable and protected when working at the site.

“We’re just as interested in making sure our contractors stay as safe as our employees,” Garrison affirms. At the time of this report, construction contractors had logged 345 days without an OSHA recordable.
