Shell volunteers spread holiday cheer to local residents

Common traditions during the holiday season include spending time with family, braving crowded malls and enjoying turkey dinners. Shell Deer Park has a holiday tradition of its own – volunteering in the local community. For a number of years, Shell employees and their friends and family have kicked off the holidays by volunteering for the Meals on Wheels program and at the Maxwell Center Senior Holiday Banquet.

Nearly 100 Shell volunteers and Deer Park High School students teamed up on Dec. 8 to deliver meals to 150 homebound residents in Deer Park, Pasadena and La Porte. Residents were greeted with holiday songs, smiles and a warm turkey dinner.

Candace Vaughn, an engineer and member of Shell’s volunteer board, says employees have participated in Meals on Wheels for more than a decade. “Our volunteers and the high school students feel good about donating their time and energy to deliver meals. It was a great way to spread some holiday cheer to others,” she says.

Five days after the Meals on Wheels event, Shell employees joined Deer Park High School students again to serve dinner to Deer Park’s senior citizens at the Maxwell Center’s annual banquet.

Shell Engineer Allen Hentges helped out by carrying large bins of turkey, stuffing and green bean casserole from the kitchen to volunteers who prepared each plate. “We served about 400 meals in less than an hour,” he says. “We got dinner on the tables quickly because there were dozens of volunteers eager to help.”
