Recycling program kicks off at Shell Deer Park Center

An employee-led network at Shell that promotes sustainable development through awareness, education and community volunteerism launched a recycling program in May at the Shell Deer Park Center (new administration building). In keeping with this mission, the group encourages its co-workers to recycle plastics, paper and aluminum cans used at work in designated recycling bins in the new administration building.

“One of our objectives is to achieve recognition as an environmental leader among oil refiners, petrochemical facilities and in Shell Manufacturing,” says Pam Morse, Deer Park process engineer. “By recycling, our colleagues can get involved in reducing their environmental impact.”

The site’s waste minimization plan, which was completed earlier this year, also emphasizes recycling, reprocessing and reusing residuals, along with recycling office paper, plastic containers and aluminum cans. In fact, bulk recycling of plant materials, such as soil and concrete, has been ongoing for years.

According to Bruce Henderson, the site’s waste coordinator, Shell Deer Park recycled more than 100,000 tons of bulk plant materials in 2007.

“Over time, the financial and environmental impact of recycling versus the disposal of bulk plant materials can be dramatic,” Henderson admits. “It costs roughly twice as much money to dispose of these materials in some cases, whereas if we recycle, we can save 50 percent.” Plus, by recycling, reprocessing and reusing these materials, Shell Deer Park employees are doing their part to cut down on the need to expand landfill space.
