Funds raised at Shell Deer Park golf tournament set record

Shell Deer Park employees and golf hole sponsors recently raised $47,000 at the 15th annual Olefins and Heavy Olefins Golf Tournament for the Boys and Girls Harbor in La Porte. Donations topped previous years and were nearly double those raised in 2007.

Shell’s Eva and Toby Mendoza organized the tournament, which was held at the Battleground Golf Course. Over the years, the Olefins Golf Tournament has raised about $170,000 for the Boys and Girls Harbor.

“Every year, our goal is to beat the funds raised the previous year. Because there were so many people eager to participate in the tournament, we held a morning and afternoon round this year,” says Eva Mendoza. “This worked well and we plan to hold two rounds again next year.” She says there were twice as many platinum-level sponsors this year.

Jimmy Wilfong, Shell PEI; Ben Esquivel, Shell PEI; Terry Sandlin and Kelly Jones, Pro-Inspect, were the overall winners.

The Boys and Girls Harbor in La Porte is a nonprofit, long-term residential facility that houses about 70 children. In addition to the money raised at the Olefins Golf Tournament, Shell Deer Park employees volunteer at the charity throughout the year.
