| Flowserve conveys appreciation for loaned generators
After enduring Hurricane Ike, area residents, suppliers and facilities still had to weather power outages. Like many shops in the Deer Park area, the flow of electricity stopped at Flowserve Corporation, which provides pumps, valves, seals automation and services to the oil, gas and chemical industries. Unfortunately, several nearby manufacturers, including Shell Deer Park, were counting on Flowserve to serve them.
Right after the storm, Engineering talked with the company about their operations. “Flowserve is one of our valued shops and Engineering works very closely with them,” says Mia Zager, mechanical engineering manager. “We knew we would need Flowserve’s help with pump or seal repairs to support our start-up.”
Lynn Gilmore, district manager for Flowserve Flow Solutions Division, recalls the dilemma his team faced. “We told them that we had tried to acquire portable power generation but that it hadn’t happened, and we were going to have to wait until the electricity grid came back up. Shell said, ‘We want to help you get up now.’”
Zager contacted the site’s Hurricane Engineering Maintenance (HEMS) Team, and Ross Roberts, electrical engineering manager, arranged to send two 250-kilowatt generators to power Flowserve’s shop.
“We took the generators right over to their site, and they used them for several days until their power was restored,” says Roberts, adding that a motor shop, pump repair vendor, and several municipal and community groups, also received loaned generators from Shell. “It was great that our leadership said, ‘Don’t worry about the cost; just take care of the people in the community.’”
In January, several Flowserve executives, including Gilmore and Andrew Beall, senior vice president and president of Flow Solutions Division, visited Shell Deer Park to present an award of appreciation to Aamir Farid, site general manager. The plaque recognizes Shell’s dedication to the Flowserve partnership.
“First and foremost, Shell is one of our greatest partners worldwide in our industry for both our pumps and seals, and we have an unbelievable relationship. Shell provided generators to help us provide services to not only Shell, but also to our other customers. What we wanted to do was tell Shell how much we appreciated them recognizing our relationship,” Gilmore says. |
