| Refinery, Union Partner with OSHA
The bar was raised for safety and health standards Oct. 28 when Shell Deer Park Refining Company and PACE union leaders signed a joint letter of commitment for the refinery to meet all requirements of the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).
VPP recognizes and promotes effective safety and health management in the workplace. Major elements in achieving prestigious VPP “Star” status are management leadership and employee involvement, worksite analysis, hazard prevention and control, and safety and health training.
“Participating in VPP sends a clear message to our employees and the community that we are very serious about being a recognized leader in safety and health performance,” said Tim Hake, refinery president and chief executive officer. “Preventing workplace injuries and illnesses will always be our highest priority.”
Ray Skinner, director of OSHA’s Houston South Area, pointed out that no one has a trademark on safety. “I am proud of what you (Shell) have accomplished in the past,” said Skinner. “Now you have pledged to not only meet OSHA standards, but to exceed them.”
Steve Smith, president of PACE union Local 4-1, said the work preceding the signing of the VPP letter of commitment was a long time coming, but well worth it. “I am quite pleased with where we are and even more pleased with where we are going.”
Benefits cited by other companies participating in the VPP program include improved employee motivation to work safely; continued improvement of existing programs through internal and external reviews; fewer lost workday injuries; and community recognition.
