Shell Deer Park Honors FFA Winners

Shell Deer Park awarded $2,500 in prize money to Deer Park High School Future
Farmers of America (FFA) students at a ceremony on Feb. 11.

The students submitted project scrapbooks describing their animal husbandry
plans leading toward submission of their stock in the 2002 Pasadena Livestock
Show and Rodeo. Judges evaluated the scrapbooks that outlined each student's
reasons for breed selection, a feeding program, housing options, financial
considerations and description of future plans.

The third annual contest was funded by Shell Deer Park to help FFA students
think about the a-z process necessary when raising their animals, as well as
providing funds to help with animal purchase and care.

Winners are: Steer - John Winn, first place, $600; and Kenneth Winn,
second place, $300. Heifer - Kenneth Winn, first place, $450; and John Winn,
second place, $200. Hog - Jessica Sigle, first place, $300; and John Winn,
second place, $175. Lamb - Amy Ward, first place, $300; and Jessica Sigle,
second place, $175.

The winning students were awarded first and second place ribbons that will be
placed on their scrapbooks and displayed at the FFA banquet in April.

FFA helps students learn about agriculture and leadership. Each FFA meeting is
conducted by the rules of parliament and the students are taught to respect
their advisors, officers, each other and to understand the responsibilities of
leadership.
